Stephen West Sr. is back home.

Sure, it took more than 200 years and $30,000, but the former owner of the London Town tavern has returned to the historic Edgewater site.
After an article was published in The Capital, two people put up $15,000 each to purchase a portrait of West for Historic London Town and Gardens in Edgewater.

"Pieces of paper have been signed, money's been exchanged. It's ours," said executive director Rod Cofield.
The painting, which dates from 1735 to 1740 and is by renowned artist Gustavus Hesselius, will have a new home in the Discover London Town exhibit inside the Visitor Center.
"We're lucky it exists," Cofield said. "So few portraits from the Colonial Period exist in this area."
Visitors will now be able to link a person with the site and the artifacts on display. "It's a good way for (them) to tie it together," Cofield said.

The portrait arrived at London Town about two weeks ago, but has yet to mounted in the portion of the exhibit showcasing the history of the tavern. Several items have to be moved to accommodate the large painting, which has an original 18th-century gold frame.
"There's a wonderful feeling of bringing something back to its place of origin," said art gallery owner Tom Dawson. "It's one of those one chance in a thousand things."
West, who died in 1752, served as tavern keeper for over 35 years and was also South River public ferry keeper. West purchased the tavern after the original owner, Edward Rumney, fell into financial difficulty.
The portrait was a mark of West's success, and could have hung in the tavern. "Maybe in one of the more private spaces," Cofield said.
After West's death, his son sold the business to William Brown.

Until recently, the painting had been in the West family. Late last summer, a family member contacted Dawson to help sell the portrait. Twenty years ago, the gallery owner had the portrait restored.
Hesselius lived mainly in Prince George's County and Philadelpha, but visited Annapolis many times. One of his other portraits was of Thomas Bordley, whose son built what is now known as the Bordley-Randall House.

Home is where the art is.

Dawson, whose gallery is in Stevensville, always thought the West painting should end up at London Town. And he took it to the Annapolis Antiques Show in January, hoping to find a patron.
After The Capital wrote a story about his quest as part of a preview on the show, two donors came forward.
They want to remain anonymous, but are both former London Town board members.
"I'm not used to doing this kind of thing, but it was just such a rare opportunity," said one donor. "It's the biggest thing I've ever done in terms of a contribution. (The portrait) really just belongs there."
The other donor had similar thoughts about the painting:
"It just seemed to me (London Town) was the perfect place for it. It's nice to see something reunited instead of hanging on a wall (somewhere else)."

Cofield Named New Executive Director

New Executive Director Named for Historic London Town and Gardens

The Board of Trustees of the London Town Foundation has named Rod Cofield as Executive Director of Historic London Town & Gardens. The Foundation is responsible for the operation of the 23-acre site owned by Anne Arundel County. Cofield, who has acted as interim Executive Director of the site since January, has been with London Town since 2006. He was originally hired as Director of Public Programs, and since 2011 has served as Deputy Director.

The Board’s action reflects recognition that Mr. Cofield possesses the skills needed to guide London Town through the next phase of its growth. A graduate of St. Marys College, Cofield earned a masters degree at St. Johns College and has built a solid reputation in the museum community. News of his appointment has been met with enthusiasm from London Town’s partners in Anne Arundel County, museum professionals and London Town’s key funding sources.

In learning of the selection of Mr. Cofield, Rick Anthony, Director of Recreation and Parks for Anne Arundel County, said, “I know Rod will do an excellent job and continue to build upon London Town’s legacy”.

Mary Alexander, Museum Advancement Program, Maryland Historical Trust stated that “Rod Cofield’s appointment as director of Historic London Town and Gardens is good news not only for Historic London Town and Gardens, but for the Maryland museum community as a whole. Rod’s commitment to professionalism at London Town and through training workshops for the museum field as a whole is exemplary. He places London Town in a leadership role for museums in the state (and across the region).”

Carol Benson, Executive Director of the Four Rivers Heritage Area, said "Rod is a talented professional and a great colleague and friend. His skills in developing stimulating workshops and seminars for strengthening museum interpretation and programming are unequaled in our area, and have helped to make Historic London Town and Gardens a leader among museums in Maryland."

In accepting this appointment Cofield cited the dedication of the London Town staff and volunteers as key to the past and continuing success of the historic site.

Cofield’s vision for London Town is summed up here….“as we all look forward to the next few years, I am honored that the Board entrusted me to lead Historic London Town and Gardens. My hope is that London Town will continue to be a vibrant site where community members, Marylanders, and visitors from farther away come together to learn about our shared history and our excellent botanical gardens.”
