Historic London Town and Gardens Awarded Prestigious Grant
from the Institute of Museum and Library Services

Edgewater, MD - Thanks to a 21st Century Museums Professionals grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Historic London Town and Gardens, in partnership with the Maryland Historical Trust and Maryland Association of History Museums, will be offering a series of twelve workshops during the next three years for museum staff and volunteers.  This workshop series, “Creating a Visitor-Centered Museum,” will help area museums explore how their museums can become more engaging, educating, and fascinating places to visit.

Historic London Town and Gardens would like to thank the numerous organizations that officially sponsored the program and sent letters of support to IMLS: the Maryland Historical Trust; Maryland Association of History Museums; Four Rivers: The Heritage Area of Annapolis, London Town & South County; Historic Annapolis Foundation; Watermark; Sotterley Plantation; and Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area.

“Congratulations to the staff of Historic London Town and Gardens on the recent award from the Institute for Museum and Library Services for a 21st Century Museum Professionals Grant.  In these times of declining state funding for museums, this federal support is especially gratifying.  Despite budget constraints, it is heartening to know that Maryland’s museums continue to strive to meet national standards.  Such a grant acknowledges that effort.”
- MHT Director J. Rodney Little

"Museum professionals play an essential role in educating and engaging audiences. This program provides opportunities to improve knowledge and skills in the areas of collections care and exhibit development and also builds capacity through fostering strategic planning and organizational leadership."
- IMLS Director Susan Hildreth

In partnership with schools, community organizations, and other cultural institutions, the 21st Century Museum Professionals program helps museum professionals update their knowledge and skills.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The Institute's mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas. London Town Awarded Grant from National Trust for Historic Preservation
Historic London Town and Gardens was just awarded the 2011 Partnership-in Scholarship Grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Ford Foundation. This scholarly project will support the work of an intern from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, who will research land, probate, and court records involving enslaved and free African Americans connected to circa 1683 London Town, a once thriving tobacco port on the South River. Documents from the period of 1690 – 1760 will be examined and this work will be directed by Chris Haley, Director of the Study of the Legacy of Slavery Program at the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis. This targeted research project will incorporate the history of African Americans into the organized K-12 education program for visiting teachers and students that takes place at Historic London Town and Gardens. This research, occuring in summer 2012, will also be an integral part of volunteer training workshops, as well as a new interpretative outreach for docent tours, new permanent museum area, and reconstructed historic area.
